    Attention

    Observing My World

We recently shared a story in class that emphasized time of day. Take a weekend day and focus on outdoor observation together. Look for the sun (or moon), listen to the sounds, notice activities, notice smells and talk about all of your observations with your child. Repeat your observations throughout the day.

    Bonding

    Feeling Safe and Secure

We all have different feelings and different temperaments. Share your feelings with your child and encourage him to express his!

    Communication

    Reporting My Finds

The ladybug in the story was very grouchy. It made for a hard day! It is important for children to understand their feelings as well as the feelings of others. Talk to your child about feelings and demonstrate empathy for others.

Providing tactile experiences will promote brain wiring. Encourage your child to touch the world around her and talk about all of the different sensations that she feels!

Read about "Small Muscles and the Brain" in Start Smart!  by Pam Schiller, pages 116-124.

    Attention

    Observing My World

Play a dark and light game with your child. Get a flashlight and cozy up together in a dark room. Turn the flashlight on. Shine it on the ceiling. Talk about what you see. Turn it off. Turn it back on! Talk about dark and light; on and off.

    Bonding

    Feeling Safe and Secure

Sing and move with your child. It is ok to be a little bit silly! You will both benefit from the unstructured time, the movement, and the music. If you don't want to sing, just move to the music!

    Communication

    Reporting My Finds

Read a book that focuses on dark and light. Enjoy the story and emphasize differences with your child. Later, you can look for opposites in the world around you.
